Pancreatic Enzyme Replacement Therapy (PERT)
Pancreatic insufficiency is a condition where the pancreas does not produce enough of the enzymes needed for proper digestion.
These enzymes, including lipase, protease, and amylase, are essential for breaking down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in food.
Without sufficient enzymes, the body cannot effectively absorb nutrients, leading to symptoms such as weight loss, diarrhoea, fatty stools (steatorrhea) and malnutrition.
Pancreatic insufficiency can result from conditions like chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, pancreatic cancer, or after surgical removal of part of the pancreas. Treatment can involve Pancreatic Enzyme Replacement Therapy (PERT) to help with digestion and nutrient absorption.
